Windows 10 21H2: new update helps against annoying app crashes

Even before the Patch Day in June, Microsoft is providing Windows 10 with another optional update. The build 19044.1739 available in the Release Preview channel helps especially with frequent crashes in connection with the d3d9.dll, Microsoft Excel and Outlook.

Users of the Windows 10 21H2 version are currently struggling with problems and a variety of crashing apps. By June 14, Microsoft is trying to get a handle on the bugs. Just in time for Patch Day – but probably already in the weeks before – a new update should help out, which is now available for download for insiders in the Release Preview channel. In the quite extensive changelog, the Redmonders address the fundamental problems with regard to the persistent app crashes.

Error with d3d9.dll, Excel, Outlook and a memory leak

Among other things, it was possible to fix a bug that affects applications that use the d3d9.use dll in conjunction with various graphics cards. So far, this has caused apps to be closed unexpectedly. Likewise, a bugfix is introduced that will allow Microsoft Excel and Outlook to be reopened in the future without causing problems. In addition, Microsoft was able to close a known “memory leak” with the Windows 10 build 19044.1739, which affects systems that are in use 24 hours a day every week.

If you are currently facing problems in these areas under Windows 10, you can download the comparatively stable trial version directly. Using the settings in the “Windows Update” menu item, all you need to do is to initiate membership in the Insider program and select the Release Preview channel as the source of supply. If the errors do not affect you acutely, the patch should be installed by mid-June at the latest via the automatic update of the operating system. The detailed patch notes can be found in Windows Blog.
